Les bienfaits d’un repos mérité, de nombreuses fois réitérés au cours des siècles antérieurs, n’avaient jamais amené les historiens à s’interroger sur la place qu’occupait le sommeil dans les sociétés passées. Longtemps, notre histoire entière a été l’histoire d’hommes éveillés. Il est pourtant indéniable que la société française à la veille de l’Industrialisation se caractérisait par une culture dominante de sommeil, très largement christianisée et vivant selon des habitudes héritées. Le lieu d’accueil (chambres, garnis, dortoirs), le mobilier et les accessoires (lits, bourdalous, réveils, veilleuses), les attitudes du corps endormi (positionnement du corps, durée du sommeil), les rituels (prières, sujets de méditation), les vêtements (chemise de nuit, bonnet) sont des éléments partagés par la société française, tout en étant des marqueurs de distinction sociale. Un aristocrate parisien ne dormait pas comme un paysan de la Gâtine poitevine, une femme différemment d’un homme, un vieillard plus difficilement qu’un enfant… En ce sens, pratiques et discours sont intimement liés. La question du sommeil a en effet occupé une place spécifique dans l’organisation des savoirs touchant à l’étude de la nature humaine. Elle appartient, autant à la médecine, qu’à la philosophie ou encore à la théologie. Autant de disciplines qui s’interrogent sur les fonctions du sommeil, ses enjeux, mais aussi ses troubles : insomnie, somnambulisme, sommeil excessif…
